GEORGIA HEALTH SURVEYS
Each year, the Georgia Department of Education collects data from parents, teachers, and 3rd – 12th grade students about their school.  Surveys are optional, and all responses are anonymous.  Survey data will be used for school improvement.

Student Surveys will be administered by the classroom teacher between February 6 and March 10th.  “Passive” Permission Slips were sent home last week with your 3rd – 5th grade student.  You may opt your child out, by signing and returning the permission slip.  Otherwise, no action is required.  A copy of the survey is available any day from 8am – 2pm if you would like to view the questions.  They are very basic questions and the survey will take about 10 minutes.

Parent Survey –  Please click here to provide your input about Kincaid to the Department of Education.

Let me know if you have any questions!

“This Book is Too Hard!  This Book is Too Easy!”

Making sure a book is at the right reading level for your child can be a challenge. Parents often seek a “just right” book: not too hard, but not too easy. When looking for books for your child to read on his own, try the 5-finger test:

  • Open the book to the middle. Choose a full page of words. Read the page out loud, and hold up a finger each time you come to a word you don’t know.
  • One finger (thumb): Thumbs up! Great book choice, this will be easy reading for you.
  • Two fingers (thumb and index finger): Makes an L, still Looking good! Enjoy.
  • Three fingers (makes a W): Warning! This book may be best when read with someone.
  • Four or more fingers (whole hand): Stop! This book may be too tough to enjoy alone. Ask an adult or older sibling to read this book to you.
  • Finding the right book may involve a little bit of extra work, but it’s worth it in the end.                            (adapted from www.readingrockets.org)

*************************************************
I look forward to seeing our families again this Saturday, at Kincaid, from 10am – noon, for our fabulous International Day!  As always, we are committed to our daily mission to Reach, Inspire, Support and Engage every student – every day!  Please let me know if you need anything!

Take turns adding to a story the two of you make up while riding in a car or bus. Either one of you could start. Try making the story funny or spooky. This will stretch the imagination and foster a love for stories. It’s fun, too! Go the extra mile and record them as an auditory file to save for the future or jot them down in a book.

PLAY FAVORITES

What is our family’s favorite flavor of ice-cream? What is our favorite movie to watch together? What is our favorite bedtime story? Choose a question, or make up your own, that your child is excited about.

First, have your child predict or guess the answer to the question. Help her write down her prediction. “I think chocolate is our family’s favorite flavor of ice cream.” Then, have your child ask each member of the family for an answer. Have your child record the answers using a special Science Notebook or simply mark tally marks on paper. Finally, ask your child to compare her prediction to the actual answers.

Predicting is a beginning step to making inferences.  Children must think about the reasons why someone will choose a favorite and must use current observations and understanding of others to make predictions.  Have fun with having conversations with your child about his/her predictions.  (adapted from www.readingrockets.org)
